Radio-Quartett - Funiculì, funiculà
Telefunken master 23738, rec. Berlin, December 1938.
Annelotte Sees, Eva Borris, Lissy Bühler, and Jadwiga Kenda (vocalists), Felix Schroeder (piano).
Biographic research work can be tiring - there is always the chance that after some time you find out that everything you thought you knew is in fact not true. Contrary to the text I originally posted here, this group has nothing whatsoever to do with the Singing Babies - they just have an arrangement style and some voices that sound very similar.
The Radio-Quartett was quite successful in the late thirties but obviously did not survive the outbreak of the war (Jadwiga Kenda was Polish). In the early 40s Annelotte Sees resurfaced as part of the Helia-Quartett, and (as Noel Coward used to sing) that is the end of the news ...
P.S: Jadwiga Kenda was still active as the artistical director of the Teatr Muzyczny in Lodz in 1972. She died in Poznań in 1993.

Philips master 1524-1 ACP, rec. Paris, 1951/2. Pierre Jamet (tenor), Georges Thibaut (tenor), Marcel Quinton (bartitone), and Jacques Tritsch (bass and piano). Another magic moment thanks to one of my favourite French ensembles. I guess at one point or another they had to work as hired help in hobby choirs (as many singers do when they are short of cash) and knew from first-hand experience what...

Dana master DAN 2026-A-3, rec. New York, autumn 1948. Four unknown singers and [or including] Frank Gallagher with orchestra probably directed by Władysław Daniłowski. Sorry, I just had to share with you what I think might be the most horrible christmas song ever written. After leaving Poland, where he led the legendary Chór Dana, "Dan" Daniłowski immediately began to establish a new musical im...

EMI master OD 1094-1, rec. Berlin, 12 September 1932. Ari Leschnikoff (1st tenor), Erich Abraham-Collin (2nd tenor), Harry Frommermann (3rd tenor), Roman Cycowski (baritone), and Robert Biberti (bass) with orchesta and bells. I dont think this has to be commented much. A merry christmas and a very happy new year to all of you!

EMI master Ki 7007-2, rec. Paris, 1934 Four unknown singers with Rudolf Goehr (piano, arranger) and A. Valsien's orchestra. Although not one of their best records, this certainly is a piece of history. Although not very happy about the cooperation with a novelty orchestra, the Cinq de la Chanson repeatedly recorded with Valsien's ensemble, and on many of these titles you can hear they'd rather ...

Columbia master 81975-5, rec. New York, 11 October 1924. Sherman Kelly (tenor), Johnny Johnson (lead), Albert Johnson (baritone), and Beecher Davis (bass). Johnny Johnson's "Southern Quartet" first recorded for Columbia in 1921 (originally featuring George Kelly, Arthur Banks and Lemuel Jones), so they deserve a place of honour between a few other pioneering black secular groups recording befor...

Victor master B 13190-1, rec. Camden, 24 April 1913. Will Oakland (countertenor), John Bieling (first tenor), Billy Murray (lead), Steve Porter (baritone), and William F. Hooley (bass) with orchestra accompaniment. It has been said that Billy Murray's "American Quartette" was the vocal supergroup of its time, combining the finest singers from the most popular American quartets. So what, then, i...

Lied der Zeit master AM 1095, rec. Berlin, September 1948. Horst Kraft (tenor) Peter Cornehlsen (lead), Michael Lengbauer (baritone), and Bruno Klennert Quartet. Many collectors in western Germany will not touch Amiga records; they believe that anything on this label is just a rip-off of Western material to somehow appease the poor citizens caught in the GDR in the 1950s. While this may be (to ...

Favorite master 6290-t, rec. London, 26 October 1911. Four unkown singers with piano accompaniment. Favorite records are always worth checking out: many of them are of high artistical standard, some feature very rare recordings by importat artists, and others are of great interest to ethnologists (anybody else know a company that recorded in Cologne, Zagreb, Nuremberg, Rio de Janeiro, Verona an...

HMV master BT 5257-2, rec. Stockholm, October 7 1930. Folke Rydberg, Åke Wedholm, Carl Winter, NN (voc) with Curtz's Trio. One of biggest hits with the Wiggers' participation - ironically also one of the few titles they recorded psedonymously. C'est la vie ...

Imperial master K-R 3025-1, rec. London, November 1938. Three unknown singers with instrumental trio. Obviously styled after the Smoothies, this British trio recorded a few titles for the Rex label in the late 1930s, and that's all I can tell you about them. Until the war broke out, they did a radio show for Radio Luxembourg, which might explain their popularity on the continent (of which this ...

Paloma master 8105, rec. Vienna, 1937 ca. This is one of the most obscure discs I have in my collection. I can't tell you anything about the group, for obviously the name is a pseudonym and I don't have anything else by them, although at least to further titles exist. Also very little is known about the Paloma record company, except that it was active in Vienna through the 1930s - so even datin...

Pathé master 204099, rec. Paris, September 1933. Arthur Payne, Robert Carver, Edward Coleman, James Logan, Frank Riley (vocals) with piano accompaniment. One of the few black groups that chose to make a career in Europe, the Kentucky singers came to France in the late 1920s. They toured with Lud Gluskin's orchestra and made a handful of solo discs for Pathé, but not much is known about them. It...

Decca master TB 2752-1, rec. London, January 1937. Four unknown singers with own guitar accompaniment. Neither identical with the American slide-guitar group of the late 1920s, nor with the 1950s crooners of the same name, this seems to be a British group that was mightily impressed by the Mills Brothers' continental tours of the 1930s. Some have suggested this group may have been the Four Crot...

My intro to jazz at 4 years old. Daddy had this, as well as some Al Jolson and Billy Murray records that I would play. Over twenty years old at the time it was a favorite of mine. I still love it!
Rather punchy bass here! Edison discs weren't without fault [though wartime materials-shortages intensified issues], but the clarity could be quite good!
1949?
1939 would be correct - most likely October or November (master US 1110 by Jess Stacy was recorded 30 November 1939).
❤also in opera he was an extra❤
Not true that the quartett „did not survive” the outbreak of the war. In September 1940 they performed in the city of Kattowitz (Polish: Katowice) during an event „Das gibt’s nur einmal” in the market hall (Markthalle) in Kurfürstenstraße (ul. Piotra Skargi) opposite the building of the oldest high school in the city.
Lieblingslied meines verstorbenen Vaters.Danke für diese rare Version 1!!
Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton did a pretty good job with it.
The first part of the verse is reminding me on 'Balu the bear', from the soundtrack of Djungle Book.
I thought that was Damenwahl unknown song
Grandios!
I think it was WNEW in the early 1970s that had a very late night movie show called “The Milkman’s Matinee” that had this as its theme song.
The number one channel
Einfach super vorgetragen.Besser geht es wirklich nicht.Diesen Herzschmerz kann man nicht besser ausdrücken.
Genial, wunderschön. Und doch grausam😢 besser geht es nicht 😊
❤
So wunderschön 🐻❤️kk🌻❤️ 🙏👨❤️💋👨
The instrumental is crazy good!
Legendär! Unvergessen! Für die Ewigkeit!!!
This is probably the best version of this song and most accurate to the original intent. It's uncommon for modern performances to sing it like this, but a surprising example that got it right was in The Shaggy Dog (or perhaps the sequel The Shaggy DA).
Thank you, Tonino, for bringing me here! 😅
calloway went absolutely wild in this recording wow
Funny boners.
Wundervoll!
Found a copy of this some 35 years ago on the antique market in The Hague, Holland.

This record has stunned me since I first encountered it in 1973 on the Columbia LP compilation "Eddie Condon's World of Jazz." What a remarkable side! Teddy Bunn is playing chords and licks the early beboppers thought they were inventing a decade LATER (and the Gershwin song itself was a favorite of the early boppers, who built many a so-called "original" on its basic chord structure).
Now we got: Iran & Palestine! Anyone got a good rhyme for them?

I learned this Lied ,,am schule in Island''. I love the Comedian Harmonists. The Nazies desroyed them as everything around them. Never again.
The perfect song to get whacked by a Cuban hitman, and then have your ear sliced off...
Treffend analysiert !
